Exotic Food Adventures in Cancun

The school that our kids go to does a Super Trip each year. Last year, they went to Washington DC. One year they went to England. This year, they're going to Cancun, Mexico to do service and to tour the ancient ruins there.

Well, you know what a good cook Kathy is (and how much I like to eat really good food)...Kathy and I were intrigued with the idea of going to paradise to see what they eat there!

We decided to participate in the Super Trip this year and take the whole family. In fact, we decided to go up a week early before the school kids get there on an Exotic Food Adventure! My mom is an amazing cook so we invited her and my Dad to come too!

We like to go camping in our travel trailer but we've only been out of the country once before! We're not sure what to expect...but we thought that we were sure to find some exotic food and discover some new recipes to share with you on the Cook'n Blog.

We decided to wear the “Dirt Shirts” we got from our last trip to Moab to make it easier to keep track of the whole gang in the airport. We don't want to lose any of them!

Poor Dad was pretty anxious about the trip. He tossed and turned all night long and got diarrhea from the stress. He and Mom showed up about two hours earlier than planned! Speaking of diarrhea...how worried should we be about getting sick from the food in Cancun? Does anyone have any advice?

We bought Burger King as we rushed through the airport at our lay-over in Houston...from here on out...it's nothing but Cancun exotic food for us! My parents didn't though. They unpacked lunch bags with neatly wrapped salmon patties and ate them cold with peanut butter and jelly sandwiches....on the plane! There's something about the smell of salmon patties on a plane that...well...REMINDED ME OF HOME! Yum! And Dad wouldn't even give me a bite!

With five kids and my two parents, this family group consists of NINE people. Just making travel arrangements for a group this size took a considerable amount of time (thank you Barbara@dvo.com!). And, moving 9 people with all their luggage through the airport was no small feat! Feeding them for two weeks could cost a fortune...but I'm not sure. Is food in Cancun expensive? As you can tell, we have no idea what we're getting into! I look forward to comments from the readers of the Cook'n Blog.

My next post should be from Cancun. Hopefully, by the end of this trip, I'll have some good recipes and exotic food adventure stories to share with you! Stay tuned!

  3. You will not have a problem with the water in Cancun (Montezuma's Revenge). Unlike most of Mexico, Cancun is relatively new and built for tourism. The water is safe to drink in Cancun.
